Remembering Freya

A sand tribute to Freya the walrus has been created in Seahouses, the seaside town where the arctic wanderer briefly made her home.

Thought to be the first Walrus ever spotted in Northumberland, Freya turned up on our shores in November 2021 and won the hearts of many local people.

Sadly, Freya was recently euthanised by authorities in Norway who felt she posed a “threat to human safety” as too many people were ignoring warnings to keep their distance from her.

The sand art tribute in memory of Freya took place at St Aidan’s beach at Seahouses on Thursday August 25th. The idea to commemorate Freya in this way came from sand artist Claire Eason and and was organised in partnership with Newbiggin Dolphin Watch and the BDMLR.

A team of volunteers, following a template, carved out the features of Freya the walrus in the sand.
