Navigating the Kielder Forest Drive
The Northumberland 250 takes you through some of the most breathtaking and least-travelled landscapes in England. But few sections capture the spirit of the route quite like the Kielder Forest Drive. Here, deep in England's largest forest, things feel different. The roads narrow, the trees close in, and the outside world fades away completely. Twelve miles of remote, unsurfaced road winding through ancient forest and climbing to the rooftops of England — it's the kind of driving experience that stays with you long after the journey is done. It's a stretch that rewards the curious and the unhurried, and one that deserves a little preparation before you set off. Here's everything you need to know to tackle it with confidence.
The Route
The Forest Drive is a spectacular 12-mile stretch of unsealed forest road, running from Kielder Castle in the west to Blakehopeburnhaugh on the A68 in the east. It's the only toll road on the 250, climbing to heights of 1,500 feet — making it one of the highest roads in England.
Getting There
If you're following the Northumberland 250 route, you'll approach from Kielder village. Follow the signs for Kielder Village and, as you enter from the south, follow the signs for Kielder Castle — this is where the Forest Drive begins.
The Toll
The Forest Drive is a toll road, with a £5 fee payable at the toll machine at Kielder Castle. Have cash or card ready before you reach the barrier.
Road Conditions & Vehicle Suitability
This is not a regular tarmac road. The surface is unsealed, and in sections may be covered with loose stone following recent repairs. It is not suitable for vehicles with very low ground clearance. If you're in a standard car, take it steady — most vehicles get through without issue, but caution is essential throughout.
Speed & Safety
Keep to the 15mph speed limit and drive with care. Watch out for logging trucks during the working week — this is a working forest. Crucially, the drive passes through remote countryside with no mobile phone coverage, so make sure someone knows your plans and that you have sufficient fuel before you begin.
When It's Open
The Forest Drive is open annually from the start of May to the end of November. Plan your visit within this window — it is closed over winter.
If You'd Rather Skip It
No problem. Continue north out of Kielder to Saughtree, then take the B6537 to Jedburgh. At Cleuch Head, take the A6088 and follow signs for the A68, rejoining the Northumberland 250 route just north of Carter Bar.
