Kielder’s New Spider Telescope

A new radio telescope at Kielder Observatory will allow stargazers to explore Northumberland’s dark skies in all weathers.

The impressive five-metre Spider 500 radio telescope scans for radio waves coming from space. Unlike the existing optical telescopes at Kielder Observatory, this one is not dependent on the unpredictable Northumbrian weather.

The new landing marks an exciting moment in the history of Northumberland’s International Dark Sky Park and visitor experiences in the county.

You can find out more about visiting the observatory at www.kielderobservatory.org
