Set within a huge sandstone outcrop, St Cuthbert’s Cave is a spectacular freak of geology. High, long and twelve feet deep in places, the vast weight of this roof is held up by an impossibly slim column of eroded sandstone. Monks carrying St Cuthbert’s body are said to have sought refuge here whilst fleeing from Viking invaders who arrived on these shores in 875.
