Rising ominously above the cold North Sea swell, the Farne Islands offer a dramatic contrast to the vast stretches of golden sand beach most notably associated with the Northumberland Coast. Depending on the state of the tide, between 15-28 rocky islands lie scattered 1-5 miles from the mainland. After the end of the ice age, you could have easily walked from these islands to the mainland. Rising sea levels have now cut them off, which has created an off-shore sanctuary for some of Northumberland’s most spectacular wildlife. David Attenborough claims these islands to be his favourite place to seek nature in the whole of the United Kingdom.
